Going back to business school for an MBA puts your career on the fast track, and getting an online MBA fast tracks you even more. Accredited online business schools offer complete MBA coursework online, and many traditional universities are now making distance learning available for business students who need flexible schedules.
As you embark on your graduate education, put some thought into which specialization you'll take for your MBA. Online MBA programs typically offer specializations—accounting MBAs, marketing MBAs, finance MBAs, and so on. You'll take advanced core classes as well as learning in-depth about your chosen specialization.
It's possible to switch specializations partway through getting your online MBA degree, but the more classes you've taken the more difficult a switch could be. Talk to your online university counselor about future career plans and your overall goals after graduation.
Talk to several schools before enrolling in a graduate program. You'll be taking course online but every school has real people helping students with admissions, financial aid, specialization planning, career counseling, transferring credits, and arranging graduation. Use these resources to make getting your degree online a higher quality experience.
Tips to Help You Succeed in Online Business School
Strike a balance between work, school and your personal life. It's not easy to say no to overtime and family requests, but you must establish boundaries so you can complete your online MBA degree and get good grades. Explain to your boss that you're taking online classes and ask for help from family and friends.
Even though you're not sitting in an actual classroom, online business school can give you the “real” school experience—if you put in the effort. Do more than the minimum requirements and engage your fellow MBA students in conversation through board posts. Read everyone's introduction at the beginning of each class and respond to each one—it might take half an hour, but it's worth the time.
Ask questions. Lots of questions. Ask your instructor through public posts or private messages. Talk to your classmates about their work experiences and their reactions to the materials you're studying. Questions provoke thought and creativity, and you never know what you might find out.
Set aside dedicated time to study, and also study whenever you have the chance. You should allow about two hours per credit per week, so a four-credit online business class will take about eight hours of study, writing time, and assignment completion. Don't schedule everything for one day a week because if there's an emergency, you'll be scrambling to catch up.
