Stress is part of graduate school—but some degree programs are more stressful than others. Anyone who is a medical or nursing student knows the coursework is challenging, practicing your skills takes long hours, and the intensity of the program can be overwhelming.
How do you make it through graduate school without exploding from anxiety? Commit to trying this advice and your time in medical school will be just a little less stressful.
Focus on learning and practicing, not impressing your professors. If you worry excessively about impressing your teachers, that takes time away from your graduate studies. To be honest, some professors and teachers just can't be impressed no matter what you do. Curb your enthusiasm and you'll probably stand out more.
Relax and blow off steam in healthy ways. Medical school students often forget to relax—it seems as though there's no time to get your requirements done, let alone taking a break. Taking even ten or fifteen minute breaks several times a day is helpful to re-center yourself, and stay away from late nights of partying with your fellow students. Get as much sleep as possible, eat properly, and try to exercise at least a little every day.
Talk to someone outside your graduate school program on a regular basis. This person might be your sister, a former professor, a good friend from childhood, a mentor, or even a professional counselor. Vent your stress with this person regularly—once a week if possible. Take the time to call or send an email and you'll feel less overwhelmed.
Remember that graduate school doesn't last forever. While this time in your life may be incredibly intense, once you make it through your program and finish your residency requirements you'll be working as a doctor with patients. That's actually less stressful!
